Everything you need to know about planning your Family Portraits on Isle of Palms
Planning a family vacation on Isle of Palms, South Carolina? Here’s everything you need to know about choosing the perfect location, what to wear, when to schedule your session, and how to create timeless family photographs that you’ll treasure for generations from an Isle of Palms Beach Photographer.

Thinking about Family Photos on Isle of Palms?
You’re in the Right Place!
There’s something magical about an Isle of Palms vacation.
Maybe it’s slow mornings with coffee on the porch while the kids hunt for seashells. Maybe it’s bike rides beneath towering palms, afternoons spent building sandcastles, or watching dolphins just offshore as the sun begins to set.
For so many families, these beach vacations become annual traditions—one week each year where life slows down just enough to reconnect.
It’s also the perfect time to update your family portraits!
As an Isle of Palms Beach Photographer, I’ve photographed hundreds of families along Charleston’s beautiful coastline over the past 17 years. One thing I’ve learned is that the best family portraits aren’t about perfectly posed smiles—they’re about preserving the joy, connection, and little moments that make your family uniquely yours.
Whether you’re visiting Isle of Palms for the very first time or returning to your favorite beach house for another unforgettable summer, this guide will help you plan a relaxed, beautiful portrait session that feels just as enjoyable as the vacation itself.

Why Isle of Palms Is One of the Best Beaches in Charleston for Family Pictures
Charleston is blessed with several beautiful beaches, but Isle of Palms has become one of my favorite locations for family portraits—and it’s easy to understand why.
Unlike some beaches with narrower shorelines, Isle of Palms offers expansive stretches of soft, white sand that give children plenty of room to explore, play, and simply be themselves.
The sea oats dancing in the wind on the rolling sand dunes with the wide shoreline create a timeless backdrop that photographs beautifully in every season!
One of the biggest advantages is how spacious the beach feels. Even during the busy summer months, it’s often possible to create photographs that feel peaceful and intimate without large crowds in the background.
The combination of open skies and spectacular Lowcountry sunsets from this beach (the sunsets are different on IOP!) creates an effortlessly elegant setting that never goes out of style.

The Best Time of Day for Family Photos on Isle of Palms
If there’s one piece of advice I give every family, it’s this:
Trust the light.
Almost every image you see in my portfolio was created during the hour or so before sunset—often called Golden Hour.
This is when the sun sits low in the sky, creating soft, flattering light that wraps beautifully around your family. Skin tones appear natural, the ocean takes on beautiful shades of blue and gold, and harsh shadows disappear.
Midday sunlight, while wonderful for swimming and beach days, creates bright highlights, squinting eyes, and deep shadows that simply aren’t as flattering for portraits.
Even if your little ones normally go to bed early, I promise the extra hour is worth it!
Some of the happiest children I photograph are running barefoot through the waves with sandy toes long past bedtime.
Those are often the photographs parents treasure most.

Where to Shoot on Isle of Palms
One question I receive frequently is whether families need to meet at a specific beach access.
The answer is—not necessarily.
After photographing families for nearly two decades, I’ve learned which stretches of Isle of Palms consistently offer the most beautiful light, fewer crowds, natural dunes, and clean backgrounds.
I’ll recommend the best meeting location based on the season, tides, lighting conditions, and where you’re staying on the island.
That means less time worrying about logistics and more time enjoying your evening together.

What to Wear for Isle of Palms Family Pictures
Your clothing plays a huge role in creating stunning, editorial, timeless photographs.
The goal isn’t to match perfectly—it’s to coordinate beautifully.
I always recommend soft, neutral colors inspired by the beach itself.
Think:
- Ivory
- Cream
- Soft white
- Sand
- Light blue
- Sage green
- Dusty blush
- Soft gray
- Muted earth tones
Flowing dresses photograph beautifully in the ocean breeze, while linen shirts and lightweight fabrics create movement and texture.
Always avoid large logos, neon colors, busy patterns, and athletic clothing.
Bare feet almost always photograph best on the beach and help create a relaxed, natural feel.
One of the greatest benefits of working with Holy City Families is that you’ll receive personalized wardrobe guidance before your session, helping every family member look cohesive without appearing overly coordinated.

What Happens If It Rains?
Charleston weather has a personality all its own.
Summer afternoons often bring quick showers that disappear just as quickly.
The good news?
I’ll keep a close eye on the forecast in the days leading up to your session and communicate with you every step of the way.
If the weather truly isn’t suitable for portraits, we’ll simply move your session before or after the rain or to another evening whenever possible.
This is one of the reasons I encourage vacationing families to schedule their portrait session near the beginning of their trip. It gives us flexibility if Mother Nature has other plans!

Family Sessions Are Meant to Be Fun
One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that children need to sit perfectly still and smile at the camera.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The most meaningful photographs often happen between the poses.
They’re the giggles after Dad tells a silly joke.
The toddler proudly carrying a seashell.
A little girl twirling in her favorite dress.
Brothers racing toward the waves.
Parents stealing a quiet hug while their children play nearby.
During your session, I’ll gently guide your family while allowing plenty of room for authentic connection and natural interaction.
The result is a gallery that feels joyful, relaxed, and genuinely reflective of your family.

Why I Recommend Scheduling Your Portrait Session Early in Your Vacation
This might be my favorite piece of insider advice from your favorite Isle of Palms Beach Photographer.
Whenever possible, schedule your family portraits within the first two or three days of your vacation.
Why?
Because everyone still looks fresh.
No one has a sunburn.
The kids haven’t accumulated scrapes from boogie boards or bike rides.
Vacation excitement is still high.
And if weather forces us to reschedule, we still have additional evenings available before you head home.
It’s a simple decision that often makes a huge difference.

Make an Evening of It
One of my favorite things about photographing families on Isle of Palms is watching what happens after we finish.
Instead of rushing home, many families turn portrait night into one of the highlights of their vacation.
Let the kids splash in the waves a little longer.
Head to dinner at a favorite local seafood restaurant.
Stop for ice cream on the way back to your beach house.
Watch the last bit of color disappear from the sky.
Some of my clients tell me these evenings become their favorite memories of the entire trip.
And I completely believe them!

More Than Beautiful Pictures
When your children are grown, they probably won’t remember exactly which toys they packed for the beach or which restaurant you visited on Tuesday night.
But they’ll remember these vacations.
They’ll remember running barefoot across the sand.
Holding your hand while the waves rolled in.
Laughing with cousins.
Watching dolphins from the shoreline.
Family portraits preserve those memories long after the suitcases are unpacked.
Every year, I photograph families returning to Isle of Palms with babies I first met years ago now chasing younger siblings down the beach. Grandparents who once carried toddlers are now holding hands with grandchildren who have suddenly become teenagers.
Those moments become part of your family’s story.
They deserve to be remembered beautifully.

Hot Pro Tip: Celebrate with Ice Cream After Your Family Portrait Session
One of my favorite traditions is encouraging families to turn portrait night into one of the highlights of their vacation.
Instead of heading straight back to your beach house after your session, let the kids kick off their shoes, splash in the surf for a few extra minutes, and celebrate with an ice cream cone while everyone is still smiling from the evening.
Not only does it give the children something fun to look forward to, but it also helps create an entire memory around family portrait night—not just the photographs themselves.
Here are a few of my favorite sweet stops near Isle of Palms:
Shaka Shack
Just steps from Front Beach, this colorful local favorite serves hand-scooped ice cream, milkshakes, and frozen treats in a fun, laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for families. It’s an easy stop after a sunset session and a great reward for little ones who did such a wonderful job during photos.
The Sweet Shoppe at Wild Dunes
If you’re staying at Wild Dunes Resort, this charming seasonal sweet shop is a fun place to grab ice cream, candy, and other treats before heading back to your room after your portrait session.
Ben & Jerry’s
If you’re near the Front Beach area, the Isle of Palms Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shop is a reliable family favorite. Kids love the familiar flavors (Cherry Garcia, Half Baked, Chocolate Fudge Brownie), and they also offer dairy-free and vegan options. It’s an easy, crowd-pleasing stop after portraits.
A Little Tip from Your Photographer
If your children know there’s an ice cream stop waiting at the end of your session, they often arrive excited and ready to have fun. I always tell parents not to worry if little ones get a little sandy, a little silly, or even a little sleepy by the end of the evening—that’s all part of the story.
Some of my favorite photographs happen during those final few minutes, when everyone has relaxed, the sun has dipped below the horizon, and the only thing on the kids’ minds is deciding between chocolate, cookies and cream, or rainbow sprinkles.
