Why Families Love Kiawah Island

There’s a reason so many families return to Kiawah Island year after year!

Unlike busier beach destinations, Kiawah has a slower, more relaxed pace. Miles of pristine beaches, winding bike trails, maritime forests, marshes filled with wildlife, and family-friendly activities make it one of the best vacation destinations on the South Carolina coast.

As a mom (to 8 & 9yr old boys) and a Charleston Family Photographer, I’ve had the privilege of photographing countless families during their Kiawah vacations. Time and again, they tell me the same thing: they love that Kiawah gives their children the freedom to explore, play, and simply be kids.

If you’re planning your first trip, here are some of the best things to do on Kiawah Island with your kids.

1. Spend the Day at the Beach

Sometimes the simplest activities become the most memorable.

Kiawah’s ten miles of wide, uncrowded beaches are perfect for:

  • Building sandcastles
  • Collecting seashells, shark teeth and sand dollars (I find one nearly every time I’m there for a shoot!)
  • Splashing in the waves
  • Flying kites
  • Playing beach games
  • Watching dolphins along the shoreline

If you’re lucky, you may even spot dolphins strand feeding—a fascinating hunting behavior that’s unique to only this stretch of the South Eastern Coast.

2. Explore the Island by Bike

One of the best ways to experience Kiawah is on two wheels!

The island features more than 30 miles of paved bike trails, making it easy for families to explore safely together.

Ride beneath towering live oaks, through maritime forests, and alongside beautiful lagoons while keeping an eye out for wildlife around every turn.

Many local outfitters offer bike rentals, child trailers, and tag-along bikes for younger children.

3. Look for Wildlife

Kiawah honestly feels like a giant outdoor nature preserve!

Children love spotting:

  • Alligators (from a safe distance!)
  • White-tailed deer
  • Great blue herons
  • Egrets
  • Painted buntings
  • Dolphins
  • Sea turtles (during nesting season)
  • Ospreys
  • Pelicans

Encourage your kids to bring binoculars or create a wildlife scavenger hunt for the week.

4. Visit Night Heron Park

If you’re staying within Kiawah Island Golf Resort, Night Heron Park is one of the best places for families.

Depending on the season, you’ll find:

  • Playground
  • Basketball courts
  • Soccer fields
  • Lawn games
  • Seasonal family events
  • Crafts
  • Outdoor movies
  • Camp Kiawah activities

It’s a great place to let kids burn off any leftover afternoon energy after a morning at the beach!

5. Go Crabbing

Lowcountry crabbing is a vacation tradition for many families.

With a little bait, a string, and a net, kids can experience the excitement of catching blue crabs from the dock.

Even if you don’t catch dinner, they’ll have fun trying!

6. Paddle Through the Marsh

For families with older children, kayaking or paddleboarding through Kiawah’s tidal creeks offers an entirely different perspective of the island.

Glide past marsh grass while watching for dolphins, shorebirds, and even the occasional sea turtle.

It’s peaceful, educational, and unforgettable.

7. Visit Freshfields Village

Just outside the island entrance, Freshfields Village is one of my favorite places to spend an afternoon.

Families love:

  • Toy stores
  • Local boutiques
  • Ice cream
  • Coffee shops
  • Outdoor green space
  • Live music during the summer
  • Seasonal events

It’s also a wonderful place for dinner after a beach day.

8. Enjoy Ice Cream Together

Everybody knows vacation calories don’t count!

After dinner, let the kids choose their favorite ice cream flavor and enjoy an evening stroll through Freshfields Village or back along the beach.

Sometimes those simple traditions become the memories children talk about for years.

9. Join a Nature Program

The Kiawah Island Nature Program offers fantastic opportunities for curious kids.

Depending on the season, your family may be able to participate in:

  • Beach ecology walks
  • Birding tours
  • Reptile programs
  • Marsh explorations
  • Sea turtle education
  • Nature crafts

These experiences help children appreciate the incredible ecosystem surrounding them.

10. Watch the Sunrise

Vacation doesn’t always have to mean sleeping late.

One morning, grab coffee and hot chocolate and head to the beach before sunrise.

Watching the sun rise over the Atlantic while the beach is nearly empty is one of Kiawah’s most peaceful experiences.

11. Play a Round of Golf (or Mini Golf)

Need a break from the beach?

A short drive from Kiawah you’ll find family-friendly mini golf that’s always a hit with younger kids.

It’s a great rainy-day backup plan, too.

12. Take a Dolphin Cruise

Seeing dolphins from the beach is exciting.

Seeing them from a boat is unforgettable.

Several local companies offer family-friendly eco tours where children can learn about Charleston’s coastal ecosystem while watching dolphins play in the surrounding waterways.

13. Build the Ultimate Sandcastle

Turn sandcastle building into a family competition.

Bring buckets, shovels, shells, and driftwood, then spend an afternoon creating castles, moats, bridges, and sculptures together.

Sometimes it’s the simplest afternoons that become family favorites.

14. Schedule Family Portraits at Sunset

If you’re thinking about a Family Portrait Session during your vacation, I always recommend planning your portrait session early in the week. That way, if weather changes our plans, we still have flexibility for another evening during your trip!

Sunset on Kiawah provides one of the most beautiful backdrops anywhere on the South Carolina coast, with soft golden light, wide, empty beaches, and peaceful scenery that allows your family’s connection to take center stage.

The best part? Your portrait session becomes part of your vacation—not an interruption to it.

Many families celebrate afterward with ice cream or gelato in Freshfields Village, turning picture night into one of the highlights of their trip!

15. Slow Down

Perhaps the very best thing to do on Kiawah Island is…

Nothing.

Read a book on the porch.

Watch your children chase ghost crabs across the beach.

Take an evening walk.

Play cards after dinner.

Listen to the waves.

Vacation doesn’t have to be packed with activities to be meaningful.

Sometimes slowing down together is exactly what everyone needs.
